Volunteering FAQs

If you're thinking of volunteering with Manchester Central Foodbank, find answers to some of your common questions here.

How do I volunteer?

Please head over to our Volunteering page on our website and complete the online volunteer application form to register your interest. Depending on your suitability and availability, and which roles you are interested in, you may be invited to an informal online chat with our Volunteer Coordinator, Jan.

Am I guaranteed a role if I apply?

No, as this depends on which roles we are recruiting for, and your availability and suitability. However, we will keep your details on file for a time in case we have any opportunities for you in the future.

What roles can I apply for?

We have roles in our three weekly foodbank sessions, including packing food parcels, speaking to foodbank clients to help prepare their food parcel, welcoming foodbank clients and signposting to other services. We also have behind-the-scenes roles including admin support, social media, warehousing, events and fundraising, donation drives and driving.

Do you have age restrictions?

Volunteers should be 18 or above to take up most of our roles. However, 17-year-olds can help at supermarket donation drives, and younger volunteers may also be able to help at donation drives, under the supervision of a parent or responsible adult.

Can I volunteer if English isn’t my first language?

Yes, but volunteers should be able to converse easily in English and be able to understand written English.

Will I be trained in any roles I take up?

Yes, the foodbank will provide any necessary training to help you in your role and volunteering. No prior experience is necessary.

Do you cover expenses?

Yes, travel on public transport or other expenses can be reimbursed.

How much time do I need to commit?

If you volunteer in our foodbank sessions, we require a commitment of three hours per week.

We also require a regular, reliable commitment for at least a six-month period if you volunteer with us.

Can I volunteer if I have a disability?

Yes, many of our volunteering roles can be adapted to support volunteers who have disabilities.

Can I volunteer if I have a criminal record?

Yes, having unspent criminal convictions does not automatically prevent you from volunteering, but it may require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check).
